The Commonwealth Club's INFORUM presents Tom Perkins, Co-founder, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers In conversation with Adam Lashinsky, Senior Editor at Large, Fortune "I perceive a rising tide of hatred of the successful one percent," wrote Tom Perkins in a letter to The Wall Street Journal earlier this month. Tom Perkins is the co-founder of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, one of Silicon Valley's first Venture Capital firms on the legendary Sand Hill Road. He is an alumnus of Harvard and MIT, a renowned businessman and outspoken capitalist. In January of this year Tom Perkins wrote a letter published by The Wall Street Journal to "call attention to the parallels of fascist Nazi Germany to its war on its 'one percent,' namely its Jews, to the progressive war on the American one percent, namely the 'rich.'" The letter was widely criticized (in The Atlantic, The Independent among bloggers, Twitter users, and even "his own colleagues in Silicon Valley"). Perkins later apologized for making comparisons with Nazi Germany, but otherwise stood by the message of his letter. Amidst Google bus protests and growing controversy over gentrification in the Bay Area, Tom Perkins has sparked a timely conversation and is not necessarily alone in his perspective. Join us for one man's take. - See more at: www.commonwealthclub.org/inforum

What a great story! Sarah and Angus actually lived in the same apartment complex for years and their roommates even dated each other but they never met until years and states away in Richmond, Virginia. It’s crazy how things like that work out. We started filming the night before at the elegant Virginia Fine Art Museum. During the rehearsal dinner, toast after toast was given all remembering what a fun time these two were growing up. The ceremony took place at the Historic St. John’s Church. It was built in 1741 and was also the location of Patrick Henry’s famous “Give me liberty or give me death" speech. That evening, the party continued in Tuxedos and Bow-ties at the Virginia Commonwealth Club. What a day! Ury has taught tens of thousands of people from all walks of life how to become better negotiators. Over the years, Ury has discovered that the greatest obstacle to successful agreements and satisfying relationships is actually our own selves and the natural tendency to react in ways that do not serve our true interests. But this obstacle can also become our biggest opportunity, Ury argues. If women were fully represented in politics, Gillibrand says, national priorities would shift to issues that directly impact them: affordable daycare, paid family medical leave, and equal pay. Pulling back the curtain on Beltway politics, she speaks candidly about her legislative successes (securing federally funded medical care for 9/11 first responders, repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell) and her crushing disappointments (failing by five votes to pass a bill protecting survivors of sexual assault in the military). Andrew Young, Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations; Former Atlanta Mayor; Strategist to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Willie Brown, Former Mayor of San Francisco (Introducer) Skip Rhodes, Past President, Commonwealth Club Board of Governors (Chair) Kevin Johnson, Mayor of Sacramento – Moderator To Andrew Young, the images of young protesters in Ferguson, Missouri, facing off against police officers look awfully familiar. Fifty years ago, as a key confidant and strategist to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Young was on the front lines of the civil rights movement, when people from around the country answered Dr. King’s call. But he says there’s a big difference: young people who were galvanized by violence against peaceful civil rights marchers were ushered into a movement whose leaders had clear objectives and were grounded in a deeply thought-out philosophy of non-violent struggle. Andrew Young knows that for many of the youth marching in Ferguson, the civil rights struggles are practically ancient history. But he believes it is a history well worth revisiting, because it demonstrates the very real potential of strategic civic participation. Young — who served as a mayor, member of Congress, and U.S. ambassador — now heads a foundation that is focused on the development of emergent leaders and social entrepreneurs. He says it is not enough for people of his generation to preach the responsibilities of citizenship. “We must make connections between generations of individuals who are committed to action, sharing hard-won knowledge and equally hard-won hope that action can result in change.” - See more at: http://www.commonwealthclub.org/events

Stuff 2015-04-01John Marwood Cleese (/ˈkliːz/; born 27 October 1939) is an English actor, comedian, writer and film producer. He achieved success at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and as a scriptwriter and performer on The Frost Report. In the late 1960s he became a member of Monty Python, the comedy troupe responsible for the sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus and the four Monty Python films: And Now for Something Completely Different, The Holy Grail, Life of Brian and The Meaning of Life.
In the mid 1970s, Cleese and his first wife, Connie Booth, co-wrote and starred in the British sitcom Fawlty Towers. Later, he co-starred with Kevin Kline, Jamie Lee Curtis and former Python colleague Michael Palin in A Fish Called Wanda and Fierce Creatures. He also starred in Clockwise, and has appeared in many other films, including two James Bond films as R/Q, two Harry Potter films and three Shrek films.
With Yes Minister writer Antony Jay he co-founded Video Arts, a production company making entertaining training films.
Monty Python (sometimes known as The Pythons) was a British surreal comedy group who created Monty Python's Flying Circus, a British television comedy sketch show that first aired on the BBC on 5 October 1969. Forty-five episodes were made over four series. The Python phenomenon developed from the television series into something larger in scope and impact, spawning touring stage shows, films, numerous albums, several books and a stage musical as well as launching the members to individual stardom. The group's influence on comedy has been compared to The Beatles' influence on music.
The television series, broadcast by the BBC from 1969 to 1974, was conceived, written and performed by members Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin. Loosely structured as a sketch show, but with an innovative stream-of-consciousness approach (aided by Gilliam's animation), it pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable in style and content. A self-contained comedy team responsible for both writing and performing their work, the Pythons' creative control allowed them to experiment with form and content, discarding rules of television comedy. Their influence on British comedy has been apparent for years, while in North America it has coloured the work of cult performers from the early editions of Saturday Night Live through to more recent absurdist trends in television comedy. "Pythonesque" has entered the English lexicon as a result.
Christopher Eric Hitchens (13 April 1949 – 15 December 2011) was an English American author and journalist whose career spanned more than four decades. Hitchens, often referred to colloquially as "Hitch", was a columnist and literary critic for New Statesman, The Atlantic, The Nation, The Daily Mirror, The Times Literary Supplement and Vanity Fair. He was an author of twelve books and five collections of essays. As a staple of talk shows and lecture circuits, he was a prominent public intellectual, and his confrontational style of debate made him both a lauded and controversial figure.
Hitchens was known for his admiration of George Orwell, Thomas Paine and Thomas Jefferson, as well as for his excoriating critiques of various public figures including Mother Teresa, Bill Clinton, Henry Kissinger and Diana, Princess of Wales. Although he supported the Falklands War, his key split from the established political left began in 1989 after what he called the "tepid reaction" of the Western left to the Rushdie Affair. The September 11 attacks strengthened his internationalist embrace of an interventionist foreign policy, and his vociferous criticism of what he called "fascism with an Islamic face." His numerous editorials in support of the Iraq War caused some to label him a neoconservative, although Hitchens insisted he was not "a conservative of any kind", and his friend Ian McEwan describes him as representing the anti-totalitarian left.
